Acers kweken met miljardensteun
De EM-Vereniging was vandaag op bezoek bij Dick van der Maat en zijn Japanse Esdoorn kwekerij. Hij gebruikt bij de teelt het bijzondere hulpmiddel E-M ofwel Effectieve Micro-organismen. Van der Maat is in Nederland één van de weinige professionele tuinders die dit leger van miljarden organismen in zijn voordeel weet te benutten.
De voordelen bij Van der Maat:
- Succesvol enten overlevingspercentage is gestegen van 80% naar 99% tot 100%.
- Besparing op kosten chemische bestrijding.
Een belangrijke voorwaarde voor succes is volgens van der Maat het geven van meer aandacht. Ook is het bedrijf na zeven jaar EM-ervaring nog niet uitgeleerd. Zie het zelf in de 2×6 minuten durende video’s op deze informatiedag van de EM-vereniging.
Tip van de dag: EM-keramiek kraaltjes in je tuinslang/waterleiding. Kost niks en heel effectief. De EM-modderballen in de waterbassins: geen algen. Zie de foto.
In de derde video vertelt van der Maat in zijn kas hoe je EM-5 niet moet aanbrengen. EM-5 is een mengsel dat je - grof gezegd- gebruikt om op te ruimen. Als je het puur op je planten spuit, krijgen ze natuurlijk een flinkte klap. Dat is ook nog wel te zien een vak van deze esdoorns. Ze komen er wel weer bovenop.
In de kas vertelt Dick ook over een ander succes van de EM. Door de goede bestuiving heeft hij al meer dan 1000 soorten in deze ene kas staan.
Visit to Oosterschelde Dam
The 12th world miracle: the closeable dam in the Oosterschelde river, the best horse of the Delta works, protecting Zeeland against the sea. You can enter the huge concrete blocks to see the water rushing in from close by. These pics were taken when the sea was 1m higher than the Oosterschelde. The two red lines on a concrete block indicate the level where the dam will close (lower red line) and the level of the 1953 flood (upper red line)

Tailing the Griendworker
This weekend we did an historic excursion to the Biesbosch national park leading us back to the forgotten lifestyle of the griendworker: the men who harvested and collected the willow branches. The men, mostly catholic from surrounding villages like Drimmelen and Made left their families during the weekdays to sleep in circumstances rarely seen in our part of the world these days.
When watching the video of the pics, you may think this is nature you see. No. Every square meter of this area has been cultivated by humans. Trees, trenches, water systems. Only the beaver lodgeBeav is non-human 
Before the days of the tie wrap, the men also used willow branches to tie up their piles. The technique to fold these wraps is shown by our guide Toon on this video. In the galleries you will see pictures of:
