For countless years I’ve been working on that single sustainability project, now resulting in the first developer release of Rgbtrade. I will tell you how I got there.
Back in, say, 1994, I was already in the sustainability field (Duurzame Ontwikkeling in Dutch). I was an active member of a local youth group. As part of national NGO, we were invited for the yearly talk with the dutch minister of Environment, Margreeth de Boer. She was explainig to us what she would not preceed with the plans for an eco-tax system: too complicated for the lawyers. Now she would look at the possibility of eco-subsidy system. Well, I said – 22 yrs old, long hair, technical guy – , that will probably too difficult as well. Why not look at making the whole money system ecological?
Nobody knew what that meant: there were no words to follow those. Bad move Barry, how can you say something so weird? But here it finally is: the money system that is ecologically balanced by itself.

I saw your pictures of the permaculture and read your story and visited the source forge project. On both I like to give you a response:
* Permaculture: I live in Deventer at 5 minutes walk from the Permaculture. I work as a volunteer for PC and the HvT. But most I do the website from Hvt in Joomla. Through Google Alerts I found you site and saw your photo’s. Good pictures, nice impressions of the course. So I would like to link your page to our page on PC – Is that OK with you I hope ?
* I suppose you know the Lets-trading system. The marketplace looks a lot like that. See also open source project Cyclos, Lets Deventer and Noppes in Amsterdam.

We were on google alerts you say? What did they invent this time ?? They go faster than I can follow!
About the rgbtrade system: we’ve gone live at rgboog.nl (dutch only). I have looked at cyclos. My problem with that is that they do java and a. i cant do java, im too stupid for it, and b. a regular webhost does not support java but php. I see lots of great project in java, python, asp whatever but I dont have the hosting for it. SO I moved on and did it myself.
On the theoretical level, the LETS systems are more like plain capitalism then like rgbtrade. We’ll see how that works out in reality.
Nevertheless LETS has always been a good inspiration for me.
